ππ¨ rush
rush is a term for last minute tickets, typically purchased the morning on the day of the performance. there are two kinds of rush - digital or in-person. always check a production's specific rush policy before showing up at their box office. if they have a digital rush, they may not have rush tickets available in-person.
in-person rush 101:
tickets for an eveningβs performance are available at the time the box office opens that morning, often 10am.
first come, first serve - so arrive early. for more popular shows, in-person rushers have been known to begin queuing 4hrs before the box office opens. for a weekday show, 2hrs prior to opening is pretty safe.
theatre-goers are usually allowed to purchase a maximum of two for any particular showtime.
in-person rush can be fun! the folks that are willing to stand a couple hours for theatre tickets are generally enthusiasts and it can be fun to talk about shows with people who have seen a wide variety of productions. if you're feeling less social, bring a book or headphones and the time will fly by.
digital rush 101:
handled mainly through the todaytix app.
opens at a specific time, and all tickets are up for grabs at the same time.
go fast. because there is no specific queue, milliseconds matter when it comes to pressing the rush button on todaytix. once the allocated number of tickets are in carts (known as 'held'), you're out of luck unless someone releases them.
other rush tips:
weekdays with matinees are the easiest to rush, since there are multiple performances and more rush tickets available.
standing room only (sro) is sometimes available when a showtime is completely sold out, giving the opportunity for those with strong legs, knees, and feet to stand in rear of the orchestra seats. these tickets are generally a very good value, but you have to stand up, which can be a dealbreaker for many.
be mentally prepared to walk away without cheap tickets. if you're from out of town, rush can be a little risky because of the uncertainty that comes with it. it's competitive and unpredictable.
